Survey sites advertise what a survey pays, not what an hour of your time pays. Between profile questions, screen-outs (being disqualified partway through) and waiting for points to clear, the real hourly rate is usually far below the headline. Here's how to measure yours and compare sites fairly.

Reality check: apps, surveys and gigs can add a little extra money. Most people earn small amounts, and none of this is a reliable income. We never promise a payout, and we don't list anything that asks you to pay to start.

The only formula that matters

Real hourly rate = value of rewards actually received ÷ total hours spent

Count every minute: screeners you were rejected from, profile surveys, ads and cash-out steps. Count rewards only when they're in your hands, not "pending".

Example: you spend 3 hours over a week, qualify for 6 surveys and receive rewards worth $4.50. Your real rate is $1.50 an hour, even if one survey advertised "$2 for 15 minutes".

Why screen-outs matter most

Market research firms want specific people for each study. If you don't match, you're screened out, often after several minutes, and many sites pay little or nothing for that time. Your screen-out rate is the biggest factor in your hourly rate. Answer profile questions honestly: inconsistent answers can get your account closed, and it doesn't raise your match rate in the long run.

How to compare sites fairly

  1. Pick two sites and use each for the same number of hours over two weeks.
  2. Log minutes, surveys started, surveys completed and rewards received (our optional printable tracker below has a column for each).
  3. Compare real hourly rates, and drop the lower one.
  4. Keep a separate email address for survey sites so invitations don't flood your main inbox.

When surveys make sense

Surveys suit dead time: a commute on transit or a TV ad break. They don't suit anyone who needs dependable money. If you'd earn more per hour from any paid shift, take the shift.

Frequently asked questions

What is a realistic hourly rate for paid surveys?

Often a few dollars an hour or less once screen-outs and unpaid time are counted. Measure your own: rewards received divided by total time spent.

Why do I keep getting screened out of surveys?

Each study wants specific people. If your profile doesn't match, you're disqualified. It's normal, and it's why the advertised pay per survey overstates real earnings.

Should a survey site ever charge me?

No. Legitimate survey panels are free to join. Anything asking for a fee, deposit or bank login to join or cash out is a red flag.
